This is no ordinary Adelaide holiday home experience. Here, you’ll see South Australia from a whole new perspective.
Pack your runners, bicycle, fishing gear, and sense of adventure. This is a holiday for the whole family (including pups). If you’re looking for ideas on how to spend your day in the Coorong, let this five-day itinerary inspire your trip.
Day 1: On the Property
Experience the gentle pace of island life.
Start your Coorong adventure with no plans, relaxing into the energy of the land, with all the conveniences of home. Pull out the lawn chairs, open a bottle of wine, and kick back with uninterrupted views of the South Australian landscape.
Cook anything you please with the fully equipped kitchen and BBQ facilities. Stocking up at nearby Foodland, is just a six-minute drive from your idyllic Coorong accommodation.
Break up the day, taking your dog for a walk around the island, launching kayaks and canoes just metres from your backdoor, cruising on jet skis, or riding bikes around the area. Don’t forget to pack items for these outdoor activities and to prearrange local rentals.
Day 2: In Meningie
For a small town, there’s a lot of things to do in Meningie. Some of the local attractions include the Lake Albert Golf Club, Bowling Club, Croquet Club, Meningie Cheese Factory Museum, horse riding, motocross, and quad biking. Plus, of course, the famous Pink Lake.
Seafood is incredible in this part of the state. Visit Freshies Café and Bar, Dascul Diner, Lake View Café, and Coorong Wild Seafood. Nothing beats a country pub or bakery, so check out the Meningie Hotel, Meningie Bakery, and Happy Daise.
Day 3: On the Coorong
Beyond your accommodation on the waterfront, you’re surrounded by lakes, rivers, bays, and the ocean. If you’re staying with us over a weekend, try sailing with experienced locals. On Saturday mornings, Meningie Sailing Club lead the way in yacht experiences.
See the region through the eyes of 30-year, local lakes and Coorong fishermen on a Wildside Tour. Get out on the water, learn about the region, and marvel at the variety of wildlife you’ll see. Seals, emus, pelicans, and the 230+ bird species.
You could spend all day exploring the iconic and historic Coorong National Park, stretching 130 kilometres. Visit the 1878 Point Malcolm Lighthouse, share a picnic lunch at Long Point, spot pelicans at the Jack Point Observatory, and explore Chinaman’s Well Historic Site Walk.
Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, embracing your holiday sanctuary, are also perfect for sailing, paddleboarding, water skiing, fishing, and swimming.
Day 4: On the Murray River
Drive north 45 minutes and you’re on the Murray River.
The river snakes through various towns including Wellington and Tailem Bend so, if you own a boat, make this a day trip from your Coorong accommodation.
There’s a boat ramp in Wellington to set off on your river adventure. While you’re in the area, stop at one of the many riverside restaurants, such as The Wellington Hotel.
Transport yourself back to the 1800s to see what life was like for the early settlers of South Australia, in the Tailem Bend Pioneer Village. For the car enthusiasts in the family, the Bend Motorsport Park is must-see.
Day 5: On a wine and food ‘tour’
After an adventure-filled few days, you’ll be craving a change of pace to conclude your incredible trip. Leave the walking shoes and fishing rods at home today and get ready for a mini wine and culinary tour.
Drive along the shoulder of Long Bay for approximately 1.5 hours and you’ll reach Kingston, SA. Stop at the Big Lobster for an obligatory Instagram photo, then onto Cape Jaffa.
Visit Wangolina, Norfolk Rise Vineyard, Cape Jaffa Wines, and Ralph Fowler Wines. This tip of the south-east is a wine region with its own character – one that shouldn’t be missed on your trip to the Coorong.
While there’s various activities and attractions to pack into your Coorong holiday, it’s lovely to know whatever you do, your luxury private island retreat is waiting.
